General

There will be four marked assignments worth 35% of the final mark. Each assignment is weighted equally. There will be a midterm worth 25% and a final examination worth 40%. You must pass the exam component in order to pass the course. That is, you must obtain a mark of at least 32 (out of 65) on the total of the midterm and final marks to pass the course. Otherwise, your final mark in the course will be your examination and midterm mark.

Midterm Exam

The Midterm is scheduled for Wednesday, June 20, 7:00-9:00pm in DC 1350. If you have a conflict with this time, the alternate time is 4:45-6:45 PM the same day. Please inform the instructor as soon as possible if you need to write on the alternate time, since space is limited.

If you believe you have received an unfair mark on the midterm, you have up to one week from the date the midterm was handed back to request a remark. Please attach a written explanation to the cover of the midterm and give your midterm to the instructor.

If you are unable to write the midterm, due to legitimate reasons, then the final examination is weighted at 65% of the final mark. Please come and see the instructors if you cannot write the midterm. Both midterm and final are aids allowed examinations. Aids allowed: the printed course notes, your own handwritten notes and assignments, and the course text.

Final Exam

Spring 2012 final examinations will be held July 30 - August 10, 2012. More Information from the Registrar's Office.

Students are advised not to make any travel arrangements before the final examination times are posted. Note that in the event that the final examination is postponed, the final examination will be rescheduled for the day following the end of the regular examination schedule. Under no circumstances will alternate examinations be scheduled for students who have made travel arrangements which conflict with the final examination.

Students must inform the registrar's office if they have a conflict in the final examination schedule, by the date posted on the registrar's web site. Note that there is a precise definition of conflict as defined by the registrar. www.registrar.uwaterloo.ca/exams/finalexams.html

The course instructors will then be contacted by the registrar's office to make alternate arrangements. Under no circumstances will the instructors make alternate arrangements for a final examination unless given instructions by the registrar's office.

Midterm, Final Exam Questions

The questions on the midterm and final will be similar to the questions on the assignments, except there will be very few MATLAB-specific questions (if any). Most of the questions will be analytical. You may be asked to use precise pseudo-code to describe an algorithm. Since aids are allowed on the Midterm and Final, memorization of formulae is not necessary.
