Loop Subdivision

Loop subdivision falls in the category of triangular subdivision. His subdivision converges to a C1 surface even at extraordinary points.

Some of the problems that arise from this is that not all objects are smooth and we would like to be able to capture sharp features. Another problem is merging 2 subdivided surfaces.

Matching the original control mesh does not guarantee even C0 continuity. Therefore, some refinements need to be done.

Hughes Hoppe has published a number of papers that addresses surface reconstruction and optimizations issues. He refined the subdivision rules to capture sharp features and to follow boundaries. This will guarantee C0 continuity on the boundary.
