(Also the TAs get it so that they know what you know :-)) It meets Mondays and Wednesdays 10:00 -- 11:20 in DC 4041. Its first meeting is TODAY Wednesday 2 May. See you there. This is to inform you that the course Web site has been updated extensively. It will be considered finalized except as noted on specific pages. No matter what, the readings and topics listed in https://www.student.cs.uwaterloo.ca/~cs492/timetable.html will be updated to reflected reality. Dates of RPEs and due dates of assignments will NOT be changing, except under VERY EXCEPTIONAL circumstances. There has been a significant amendment to the RPE page at https://www.student.cs.uwaterloo.ca/~cs492/rpe/index.html with the addition of two new RPEs that may be substituted for two existing RPEs under certain conditions described therein. The topic for the week is the Internet. Come prepared to discuss it. I will start off by giving a little historical perspective. Then we will begin our first discussion. There will be a movie in the first part of Wednesday's session. Come to see which one :-). Remember that the first assignment is due THIS Thursday 10 May at 10:00am. The deadline for assigning yourself to an RPE is next Monday, and the first RPE is next Wednesday. Because of the long waiting list of students wanting to take this class and the lost of points for participation in class, anyone who has not shown up in the first two lectures will be strongly urged to drop the class. It gave me two ways to answer.. 1. reply to the message 2. go to a link it provides.. that link has not succeeded to load after 10 minutes.. I did the reply method but it does not seem to be very specific, with a return address of "reply@piazza.com". So I don't trust it Since I have not used Piazza before.. I am sending it to the class e-mail list that I built.. If you tell me that the reply mechanism worked, I will not do this back up sending any more =============== Subject: Re: Newpaper or formal writing format for A1? Hi All >Newpaper or formal writing format for A1? >For assignment 1, the instructions ask for a deliverable that would be >something that could be published in the Imprint newspaper. That's the idea ... after all, the assignment says "The exposition should be directed at someone who has some technical proficiency (owns their own computer, for example, but can't service it using a Swiss Army knife; that is, not a computer science major, a hobbyist, or a devoted consumer of computer magazines) but who may not have thought too much about anything beyond the technical aspects of computers." >Are the TAs going to be looking for this tech blog format, or will it be >marked for formal written English (similar to how work term reports are >marked)? A work-term report will definitely not do.. When I mark it, I will try to forget that I am a CS prof.. (which should be easy because I am over 65.. :-) ) and read it as an ordinary human being.. If it engages me and sparks my interest, I will be happy ... If I have trouble staying awake, I will not be happy ... I have ordered the drop box for this term.. but they are slow in setting it up.. In the meantime for the assignment 1 due tomorrow on 10 May, use the ONE cs492 drop box that is still labeled and on which I have crossed off "Robin Cohen" and a time and written "Daniel Berry" and "Dan Berry" by hand. I will ask the drop box people to fix it ASAP If you find that this sign has been changed to a fully printed one with MY NAME on it, of course use it :-) Dan ================================================================================ Date: Wed, 9 May 2018 21:14:20 -0400 (EDT) To: dberry@uwaterloo.ca Subject: CS 492: REMINDER: please send Ben Armstrong your preferences for the RPEs Bcc: cs492all Howdy All This is a reminder to send your e-mail to Ben Armstrong as indicated at https://www.student.cs.uwaterloo.ca/~cs492/rpe/index.html to list your preferences for RPEs, particularly if you care which RPE you end up doing. Even if you don't care, we would prefer having some preferences over doing random assignments. :-) Note that the table now has the dates for each RPE so that it's easier to see what is when. The table also has listed the new substitutable RPE11 and RPE12, but without dates, to remind you of their existence and of the possibility to use them in place of any other, if everyone, if any, doing the original agrees to the substition. The first RPE is taken care of, but the second RPE, RPE7 on May 23 lacks a Team B. Remember, these first two RPEs are graded more leniently than the later ones! The deadline for sending the message is 10:00am Monday May 14! Looking forward to reading your Assignments 1, due tomorrow (Thursday) morning at 10:00am in the course assigment box near MC 4066. The first RPE is Wednesday, and the RPE messages are due at 10:00 Monday. Have a good weekend. Don't behave. This discussion may continue into Wednesday. The last hour of Wednesday will be the first RPE on Universal IDs. The position papers for the two sides should be available by Monday afternoon at 4:00pm. Remember that your message requesting specific RPEs is due Monday at 10:00. After that you, if you have no request in, you will be randomly assigned. If we have a lull in the discussion, we will discuss the marking of Assignment 1, which will be returned on Wednesday. I thought that the anonymized question and answer should be distributed to the entire class. >Hi, >So after reading the description of the assignment, I'm a bit unclear >as to what I should be talking about. So it says that to 'Begin your >essay with clear articulation of the technology underlying the mobile >devices chosen as your focus for discussion, clarifying what causes >this to be labeled as "computerization"'. >Does this indicate that I should be choosing a specific form of >technology, such as a laptop, tablet or smartphone and discuss how >those benefit the workplace? >Alternatively, could I focus on the underlying technology of the mobile >devices? So for example, if I were to discuss the implications of the >3G network in regards to mobile devices and how that has benefited the >workplace. If I understand you correctly, I would say "both".. I am not trying to be flippant. The way I read the assignment is that you first choose a specific mobile device or two (e.g., smartphone, tablet, etc.) Because of the space limitation, it's OK to choose only one. Do the research, decide what to write.. and then start your writing with a clear articulation of the technology underlying the device or devices you have chosen. but because the assignment says: "you do not consume most of the pages simply describing the technology", this clear articulation is short, so that you can devote most of the 2000 words to the social implications of the device or devices. Does that help? >Thanks! You are welcome Dan ================================================================================ Date: Sat, 16 Jun 2018 23:54:30 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Clarification of Assignment 3 Bcc: cs492all Hello everyone, This is a reminder that during the week when your team has their RPE, it is expected that someone from the team engage with other students on Piazza. By doing this, you can help boost your team's participation grades by a little bit.
